Minute Mastery Episode 1

How A Time Audit Can Revolutionize The Way You Manage Your Day!

How a time audit can help you plan your day and manage time like a pro! I am a mom, and I understand what it means to be very busy with hardly any time to breathe.

But I also know that we can easily get distracted when we engage in activities that do not serve us. And those activities add to an already tight schedule!
To help you manage time, you must first identify how you use time. Track what you do. And study your results. So, you know that you are using time the right way. It is hard work, but the payoff is huge. You identify time wasters, and having "no time" becomes a myth!

In secondary school, we used many English idiomatic expressions. When writing, either assignments or exams, we included these expressions. Some of these expressions did not make sense then, as English is not my first language.

One expression I struggled with was, "If you take care of the pennies, the pounds will take care of themselves." For years, the expression did not make sense. Until years later, when someone used it to explain the importance of not wasting money. We may spend time working to make money, but if we ignore how we spend the little cents, or the pennies, our dollar or pound will not serve us well!

Managing time is pretty much the same. If you let the minutes slip by, you won't have the extra time to spend later as you have used up everything. So, collect the minutes during your day! My job is to show you how and encourage you to keep going.

Do You Want to do Your Time Audit?

In this first episode, we look at how to use a visual board to track time. So, from the moment you wake up, you use time with intention A picture tells a thousand words. A visual board helps you put things in perspective.

If you often feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done, or you’re constantly juggling tasks without any sense of accomplishment, a Time Audit might be just what you need. In this episode, we’ll explore what a Time Audit is, how to conduct one, and how it can transform your daily routine. So, you start keeping an eye for the minutes to get the hour.  Let’s get started!

What Is A Time Audit?

Think of it like a financial audit but for your time. Just like tracking expenses helps you manage your budget, tracking your time helps you manage your schedule. A time audit can help you work with intention. The goal is to gain a clear picture of how you’re currently using your time and to find opportunities to optimize it.

What are the benefits of creating visuals board?

  • You see things as they progres
  • It proves efficiency
  • It improves productivity
  • it helps you focus on important tasks
  • It reduces waste of time
  • You have control on how you work tweaking things to suit changing circumstances.

How to Conduct a Time Audit?

Conducting a Time Audit is straightforward, but it does require some diligence. Please follow these five simple steps:

  • Choose Your Tracking Method: You can use a physical notebook, or a time-tracking app of your choice. Manual entering is cool.  Choose the method that feels most comfortable for you.
  • Set a Tracking Period: Track your time for at least a full week to capture a complete picture of your daily and weekly routines. Although I recommend two weeks to give you a clearer picture.
  • Record Everything: Write down every activity you do from the moment you wake up until you go to bed. Be specific and include everything, even the small tasks, recording every hour or half-hour.. For example, 6:30 AM - Woke up and checked phone, 7:00 AM - Made breakfast, 8:00 AM - Dropped kids at school.
  • Categorize Activities: Some activities are related. Please put them together. You may have headings such as “Household chores,” “Work,” “Kids’ activities,” “Self-care,” and “Leisure.”
  •  Analyze Your Data: Enter your data into a spreedsheet and create either a pie chart or a bar chart. At the Review your log/chart. Look for patterns, time-wasters, and areas where you can make changes. Identify activities that take longer than expected and tasks that could be delegated or streamlined.

Obtacles to Making Changes

It is important to note that a visual board like this may make some feel nervous or anxious. It is like telling them they are not meeting up. Also, it create fear of changing from what they are comfortable with.

If you ever feel that way, know it is normal for some. We all love faimiliar surroundings. However, look at this way, you have the remote. You can change things to what you want. Identify what scares you and talk to someone about it. Remember, the charts are not meant to judge you but elevate you to create more time for You!
