Busy Moms: How to Get Things Done with Strategic Planning
My strategy for getting tasks done is to break things in bite-size pieces and understand I am no superhuman. Get only the necessary things done!
How to get things done in a fast-paced world where everything is fast-moving, and hardly any time to breathe? Do you ever feel like you are juggling a thousand tasks and still not getting everything done?
Trust me, I've been there.
In this post, I want to share how I manage to keep my business going, care for my family, and still have time for myself—all through strategic planning.
In the past, I worked 9-5 with three young children, a side hustle selling African food and a desire to write a book. I suffered burnout. And I abandoned many of my dreams!
I couldn’t keep up!
If that wasn’t overwhelming, I wonder what is. Years later, I discovered simple strategies that helped. I currently follow them to help me move the needle in my life. My children are grown now, but I am still busy.
My daily schedule is shared between immediate family, volunteering, business and now, caring for elderly parents. So, my life is still juggling everything to make things fit. And my most important strategy is organization.
How to Get Things Done: Organization
I get it, the word organization may sometimes sound scary. However, organization is a key strategy to getting things done because it provides clarity, structure, and efficiency in your day-to-day life.
Let us discuss why organization is important and how you can make it work!
- Clarity of Priorities: Organization helps you identify what needs to be done first and what can wait. When you have a clear plan, it’s easier to focus on tasks that truly matter rather than getting overwhelmed by everything on your to-do list. Prioritizing tasks ensures that you spend time and energy where it counts most. How can you make this less scary? Take the scare from head to paper. When you write things down they do not seem as difficult.
- Efficient Use of Time: When you are organized, you avoid wasting time looking for things, figuring out what to do next, or feeling indecisive. Planning your day or week ensures, that you make the most of every moment, whether it’s blocking out time for work, family, or self-care. How can you make this less overwhelming? Plan your week at the start of the week. Give yourself about an hour to organize your week. Make it relaxing with your favourite drink while relaxing and chatting with family as you plan. Who knows they may help you with suggestions on easier ways to organize things for you and everyone else!
- Reduced Stress and Overwhelm: Disorganization leads to chaos, and increases stress levels. Being organized gives you a sense of control over your tasks. Knowing what is coming next helps you avoid last-minute panic and creates a more peaceful environment where you can tackle one thing at a time. Why is this helpful? You need a calm heart to get things done. If you organize things you will know what is coming, which increases your confidence in getting things done.
- Better Focus: Organization helps eliminate distractions. When your tasks, goals, and even workspace are neatly arranged, you can stay focused on the job at hand instead of bouncing from one thing to the next. This single-tasking leads to higher quality work and faster completion of tasks. Why is this important? Studies show that focusing on one thing at a time in a tidy workspace increases productivity and efficiency, you get a lot more done.
- Increased Productivity: Organized people get more done because they have a plan. When you break down large projects into smaller, manageable steps, you can track progress and see real results. This momentum keeps you motivated and drives productivity.
- Improved Decision-Making: When you are organized, you have all the necessary information. This allows you to make informed decisions quickly, whether it is about scheduling an event or tackling a new project. Disorganization can lead to indecision, making it harder to move forward. As you plan your week, you see everything before you and you can discern what things to move around to make things better.
- Balance Between Work and Life: Organization allows you to balance various aspects of your life. Whether your career, family responsibilities or personal time. A well-structured plan helps ensure that no part of your life is neglected, making it easier to achieve your goals while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
In essence, organization empowers you to be more proactive rather than reactive, giving you control over your time and helping you achieve your goals with less stress.
Use Simple Tools as Reminders
Every mom should have basic tools which include the following:
Pen, notebook, daily planner, gratitude journal and apps that can help you track what you do and strike tasks off as you go!
Use your note app to create a list and jot down points to remember.
Although, I recommend handwritten notes, because of the benefits (more on this in the future). I also think you should transfer any handwritten notes to digital as soon as possible. Especially, if you are writing a book. Typing in any Word document will help you later. Also, digital documents are easier to keep for posterity.
My favourite note apps are my Apple Note and Google Keep. You can either of them for long-term projects like writing or planning content, and for quick notes and reminders.
Digital tools are great for keeping all your thoughts in one place, especially when you are on the go. Don’t underestimate the power of simple checklists!
Ladies, we are not superheroes, but with the right tools and a bit of strategic planning, we can achieve much. Don’t be hard on yourself. It takes time, and small steps every day. Remember to celebrate the wins, no matter how small.
